Guatemala Quilts delivered:

In November of 2006 an appeal went out from a Rotarian in Maine, USA for cuddle quilts. They were needed for the little children in a preschool that Rotary clubs in the US and Canada had provided for the children of the Guatemala City dump. The Dufferin Piecemakers' executive approved our sending 12 quilts to this worthy project. The following pictures show the distribution of the quilts to the children - 200 were personally delivered by the Maine Rotarians. Each preschool child received 2 quilts - one for use at school and one to take home. Needless to say, and as you can see from the pictures, the children were truly delighted with their quilts - many had never had their own bed or blanket before.

One of the "Aims and Objectives" of the Guild is to participate in community projects and over the past eight years the Guild has offered support to a number of organizations. Family Transition Place has received Christmas Stockings, Cuddle Quilts and a quilt for Silent Auction and 24 full sized bed quilts. The Fire and Police Departments of Caledon, Orangeville, Grand Valley and Shelburne area are supplied with Cuddle Quilts for distribution to young trauma victims with the hope that the children will find warmth, comfort and security in their time of need. Breast Cancer Patients recovering from mastectomy surgery receive a small pillow in a draw string case to place under the arm to relieve pressure on the surgery site.

The afternoon Stitch & Share Group created a beautiful Friendship Flower Quilt for the 2003 Breast Cancer Research Auction and are planning another one for the next Auction.

Hand knitted teddies for the "Teddies for Tragedies" project find new homes in the arms of Third World children. The local hospital receives small quilts for placement on the incubators of premature babies. Quilt Canada has received fabric and two table toppers as door prizes for their quilt shows.

The Encyclopedia of Quilt Blocks was donated to the four local libraries during Quilt Month in May and the four local high schools’ students may receive a textile bursary. Guild members may also apply for the Bursary.

It is a pleasure to belong to a Guild that gives from the heart.
